These two first-cycle Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus argenteus/argentatus) were photographed at Dix Tip, Oxfordshire, England on January 7, 2008. On both birds the barring on the undertail coverts is fairly dense, matching that of many of the more lightly-marked smithsonianus I see in Texas. Also, second bird has smith-like axillaries and underwing coverts, while the first bird has smith-like inner primaries, neck shawl, and to some degree uppertail coverts and belly markings...:
