This two presumed first-basic smithsonianus Herring Gull were photographed at Bolivar Flats, Texas on November 22, 1999; these birds were close to each other on the beach, and have a similar long-winged, slim-billed structure:
Note the bill pattern for a bird molting from juvenile to 1B; compare it to this bird from half-a-mile away:
